The Great Ocean Road

Last weekend Cathryn and I were lucky enough to have had our first 'guests' come and visit us. Adam and Nikki have recently moved to Melbourne from the UK too and this was the first opportunity we'd had to all meet up down in Geelong and spend some time together.

They hadn't really left Melbourne much since arriving and I think they were pretty keen to see some of the Australian coastline, so we decided to take them to Torquay and Bells Beach on Saturday afternoon followed by a slightly longer drive down to Lorne on Sunday.

It was the first weekend of Spring and you could really tell, the weather was gorgeous on both days and we really made the most of it, taking in some of the beautiful beaches that make up the first, small portion of The Great Ocean Road. We paddled in the crystal clear seas, soaked up the sun, ate noodles on the beach and generally just enjoyed being outside and taking in some of the great things our new surroundings have to offer.

After lunch we decided to head inland to a little secluded spot up in the hills behind Lorne called Erskine Falls, where we found the amazing waterfall, which we all loved. We were keeping our eyes peeled for Koalas up in the trees but unfortunately didn't spot any this time.

We really had a lovely couple of days hanging out with Adam and Nikki and are already planning on heading up to Melbourne soon to see their new flat and discover a bit more of 'Melbs' with them.

Cathryn's Birthday Surprise

It was Cathryn's birthday on Thursday and I surprised her by booking her an introductory flying lesson on Saturday morning. Learning to fly has been something she has wanted to do for a very long time so I thought it would make for a really exciting present for her and it would be something she could remember for a long time.

We arrived at Barwon Heads flying school where we met her instructor Aub, a really lovely man who's passion for flying shines through and is so infectious. Cathryn was so excited, if a little nervous, when she saw the plane and she couldn't wait to get started. The weather was absolutely perfect for it too, it was officially the first day of Spring in Australia yesterday and you could really tell, it was a gorgeous day.

Anyway, she hopped straight into the little cockpit, familiarised herself with the controls for a couple of minutes and then she and Aub headed off into the big blue sky, leaving me to try and keep track of them as they circled the airfield and the nearby beaches and farmland.

Cathryn's face was an absolute picture when they touched down after the 30 minute flight, she was grinning from ear to ear and the fact that she enjoyed every minute of it was obvious!!! I am so pleased that she enjoyed it and that I was able to help her realise one of her life ambitions. I'd be very, very surprised if she doesn't take some more lessons soon... I think we may be calling her 'Captain Cathryn' before too long!
